Confused about weight? You don’t need to be!

 

The gram is the basic unit of weight.

 

One gram is defined as the weight of 1 cubic centimeter of water at standard temperature and pressure.

 

Avoirdupois (avdp.) comes from French “Avoir du pois”  meaning “goods of weight”. It is the common system of pounds and ounces used in North America.

 

Here are some common weights and their equivalents:

 

 

                                                1 Troy ounce = 31.10348 grams

 

                                                1 avdp. ounce = 28.34952 grams

 

 

                                                1 pound avdp. = 16 ounces avdp.

 

                                                1 pound avdp. = 14.58333 troy ounces

 

                                                1 pound troy = 12 troy ounces

 

                                                1 pound troy = 13.16571 ounces avdp.

 

 

                                                1 short ton = 2000 pounds avdp.

 

                                                1 metric ton = 2204.623 pounds avdp.

 

                                                1 long ton = 2400 pounds avdp.

 

                                                1 metric ton = 1000 kilograms
